I was raised on a farm and have been around and on or under, if you know what I mean, horses, mules, or some kind of livestock almost all of my life. As I grew up, riding, working, buying, and trading horses and mules was just a way of life and the common practice used to tell the approximate age of the animals in question, was the information provided by their teeth. As I grew older and traveled around the country to county fairs, rodeos, shows and auctions it became apparent that less and less people actually knew what to look for in an equine's teeth in an attempt to determine their age. I then realized this ancient skill was becoming more and more confusing or possibly even being lost all together. These same techniques apply to all types of equine and have been recognized and used around the world for hundreds of years. Personally, I had never seen or known of any other written record or book devoted to the subject. So in 1993, I started spending any of my available time and energy talking with people who had been in the equine business for years and anyone else who seemed to know something about it that appeared to be valid in order to publish this material.
